We recommend experienced research project leaders (usually principal investigators) or research ethics trainers facilitate Research Ethics for All with a group of community research partners. Completing the activities as a group can support learning and application to a research study.
After completing the training, the training facilitator can complete certification in research ethics education for community research partners. This certification may be used to demonstrate compliance with institutional and/or funder policies requiring research ethics education, thereby enabling community research partners to take on specific research responsibilities that engage them in human subjects research.
After initial certification, learners can complete the refresher course when certification renewal is needed. The timeline for renewal is set by your institution, and is often every 3 years.
Learners can also complete all or some of Research Ethics for All without certification if their role does not involve-human subjects research activities Because roles and opportunities evolve over time, and scientific integrity is fundamental to public trust in science, we recommend completing all Research Ethics for All units and pursing certification. However, the units can be completed individually and certification not pursued..
People learning on their own can also access Research Ethics for All. However, people learning on their own cannot obtain certification.
To prepare to teach Research Ethics for All, we recommend training facilitators:
Remember taking breaks may help support learning.
You can include additional discussion questions after each video:
After completing the training (foundations or refresher), work with each learner individually to check their understanding of essential information required for certification by completing the certification activities.
You can use these certification activities to reinforce learning and provide Initial certification or Certification renewal.
As learners work on certification questions, you can prompt recall by asking guiding questions or referring learners to the didactic training, their workbook materials or specific conversations or experiences your team has had.
The Certification Checklist includes prompts that may support learners’ learning and recall. The checklist also includes the criteria for demonstrating understanding and can be used to document learner’s understanding. On the checklist you can also keep track of the prompts used to support each learner to complete each question.
When you are satisfied that the learner has a basic understanding of the content, you can create, download, and save a certificate to provide to the learner submit to your IRB.
The completed full checklist and/or the summary form can be provided to document completion of certification activities should this be requested by your IRB.
